A formal music education is proven to lead to better academic results, improved confidence and self-esteem, and personal growth and social development. Our College is very proud of its rich music program starting with the Band & String ensemble forms in Year 7.

The Instrumental Music Program is an optional enhancement to the music curriculum and is provided on a user-pays basis.
The program involves students learning an instrument and playing as part of an ensemble. Students are placed into ensemble classes with other students participating in the program where they learn how to play their instruments alongside one another.

Instruments

Students have a wide range of instruments to choose from. MGSC offers music lessons across the full range of orchestral and band instruments including:
  • Woodwinds: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bassoon
  • Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba
  • Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Electric Bass
  • Percussion: Includes drum kit and other percussion instruments
  • Voice and Guitar (note: voice and guitar are not included in the Music Ensemble Class)

Costs

Students enrolled in this program are:
  • required to undertake music lessons in their chosen instrument
  • purchase or hire an instrument
The cost of the program in 2027 is $700 per year. Students are encouraged to purchase their own instrument; however, a limited number of instruments are available for hire at a cost of approximately $300 per year.
